OOD John Mole and Pam Bland

The promised lighter conditions for the afternoon were very brief and 15 to 20 knot winds from the south west continued. Peccadillo and Dynamic Duo were to start in Division E and Dream On, Beaujolais, Little Miss (formerly Sofa) and Farr Side in Division F. Shipping movements were to occupy Hopetoun and Corio Channels so a course starting at St Helens, dog-legging around City 2 to the West Cardinal Mark off Steampacket Place, then out to CB2 near Point Henry and dog-legging around Hopetoun 14 and Corio 2 back to St. Helens twice around was set.

Dynamic Duo was first across the line. Peccadillo, struggling to lay the pin, switched to port tack and got an advantage. Both headed for the West Cardinal Mark.

Division F saw Dream On, Beaujolais and Farr Side start almost simultaneously, with Little Miss crossing 40 seconds later. All headed on a south easterly beat towards the West Cardinal Mark.

By the West Cardinal Mark, Peccadillo led Dynamic Duo and held the lead to CB2, gradually increasing the lead to the first pass of St Helens. Farr Side was just in front of Dream On with Beaujolais a short distance back and Little Miss struggling in the brisk conditions, was well back. Farr Side was 100m ahead of Dream On at St Helens, briskly executing the 180 degree turn around the mark. Beaujolais, another 10m back, rounded wide and continued in pursuit. Little Miss, conditions not suiting, was well back.

Another circuit and the places were unchanged in Division E. In Division F, Beaujolais made up some ground but, at the line, it was Dream On first, then Beaujolais, Farr Side and Little Miss.

After handicaps were applied, Peccadillo won both Club and YV in Division E; Beaujolais won Club and Dream On won YV in Division F. Congratulations to all and thanks to Pam for OOD assistance.

The day promised cool conditions and 15 to 20 knot winds from the south west. Peccadillo and Dynamic Duo were to start in Division E and Dream On, Beaujolais and Little Miss (formerly Sofa) in Division F. Four shipping movements were to occupy Hopetoun and Corio Channels so a course starting at St Helens, dog-legging around City 2 to the West Cardinal Mark off Steampacket Place, then out to CB2 near Point Henry and doglegging around Hopetoun 14 and Corio 2 to the finish at St. Helens was set.

The start sequence was half gone before Peccadillo, hastily hoisting sails, appeared from the boat harbour and headed directly for the start line. Dynamic Duo was lying in waiting but Peccadillo, crossing 24 seconds after the start signal, still beat Dynamic Duo by some 20 seconds and both headed for the West Cardinal Mark.

Division F saw Dream On start right on time, closely followed by Beaujolais, with Little Miss crossing 40 seconds later.

By the West Cardinal Mark, Dynamic Duo was well clear of Peccadillo and held the lead to CB2. Dream on was well clear of Beaujolais and Little Miss, struggling in the brisk conditions, was well back. After CB2, Dynamic Duo snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by attempting a kite on the very shy reach, letting Peccadillo through to the lead. So it stayed to the finish. In Division F, Dream On held the lead though Beaujolais closed the gap and Little Miss finished well back.

After handicaps were applied, Peccadillo won both Club and YV in Division E; Beaujolais won Club and Dream On won YV in Division F. Congratulations to all and thanks to Gavin for OOD assistance.

The Trailable Yacht Class Associations affiliated with Yachting Victoria have developed a new website featuring details of the types of boats and giving information relevant to the TY sailors of Victoria.

Of particular significance is a report on the state of launching ramps around Port Phillip, a study conducted by the Sonata Association of Victoria.

Relevant trailer and towing regulations also feature, along with photos and details of many types of TY sailing in Victoria. A good site fior your own reference plus a good one to direct people who are looking for a trailable boat.

Opening Day sternchaser

Beaujolais salutes the Commodore during the Sail Past

With a fresh southerly breeze to fill their sails 9 boats competed in the sternchaser during Opening Day for the 2008-2009 sailing season. With spinnakers prohibited, and a fair Olympic type course set, there was very competitive racing for all the boats.

The Commodore was first away in the lowest handicap boat Dynamic Duo, followed by the others at set times depending on their Club handicap. The fastest boat, Ken Kugler’s  Sonata 26 Free Spirit was last away, some 15minutes after the first boat. The first boat home is the winner in a sternchaser race, provided the race time for the slowest boat matches that as calculated by the handicapper when the times were set. The OOD was specially chuffed with his selection of the course took Dynamic Duo almost exactly 2 hours, the time which the handicaps were calculated on! As a result, apart from eventual winner Pecadillo (Terry Fraser) the finish was very tight between 5 other boats, Beaujolais, The Farr Side, Dynamic Duo, Vintage Red and Dream On. A couple of minutes later came Free Spirit and Seaweed.

Congratulations to Terry and his crew of Owen and Len. Pecadillo’s win should have the handicapper looking at her recent times. Especially with a hot crew like Owen and Len she is a hard boat to beat.

Over the last month the Club has conducted a senior’s sailing day. Twelve senior cits (and some not so senior) enjoyed a beautiful day on the water, some even gave had the thrill of flying a spinnaker.

Friday night the 17th October a General meeting was held at the Royal Geelong Sailing School. Our guest speaker, Committee man Gavin Wright gave a comprehensive overview of the proposed plans of the combined Coast Guard and GTYC building to placed on the South side of the groyne at St Helens.

Just prior to our Opening day our roller door at the Rotunda was driven into and badly damaged (also causing a deal of damage to the owner’s vehicle!! On contacting the City of Greater Geelong maintenance department, David Wilmot acted quickly and located some people that could assist with restoring it to operation level, as it would have made our Opening Day very difficult. John Mole and Barry Palich also ably assisted in the restoration operation.

Our Open Day on Sunday 19th October was a great day, with a morning tea to start off, the official welcome and opening, then a sail pass with some of the boats decorated with flags. Approximately 35 people attended. Returning to the Rotunda we enjoyed a BBQ lunch, followed by a stern chaser that was convincingly won by Terry Fraser in his Boomerang 20 Peccadillo.

Thanks must go to Chris Hancock for arranging the meat, salads and drinks, and to all the ladies that assisted on the day. Thanks also to Rob Ballard for officiating as OOD for the day’s activities.

We have a number of new members that have joined the club over the past months: Graeme & Joan Hollis, Charles Weatherly, Dennis Mc Dowell, Ziggy Kowalczyk, Roger Bennett (our sponsor from Four Winds Marine), Ian and Marg Whan, and Kevin O’Neil is about to join. Welcome to all these new members. I trust you will enjoy your time with the Club and I would ask everybody to look out for these new members and make them welcome. If I have missed anyone please accept my apologies.

Keep up to date with our new web site for race results, social news, important announcements etc. tHe address is…gtyc.com.au  Gavin Wright is requesting boat owners that have not updated their Cat 5 classification, please complete it and hand it in to Gavin and he will issue a new sticker for the new season ahead. Peter Jones may also request your current boat insurance.

Good sailing
